Summer's here... why dance?

Summer is officially here and I don't know about you and yours but within a few weeks, off from school and my kids get an itch to get moving and stay busy with something to do.  While rest and relaxation are essential for a child,  boredom can make any child stir crazy. Having a plan and adding consistency for kids is important for their growth and your sanity.  From soccer, karate, science, arts & crafts, to dance camp, with so many options, which one should you choose? It is a hard decision and likely your child will benefit no matter what camp you select.  However, knowing your child is learning where he/she is happiest is important.

Here are some suggestions that can help you decide if a summer dance program is a right choice for your little one. For the younger dancer observation works best, does your little one wiggle and shake whenever there is music playing?  Is she/he running, hopping, jumping, spinning, or twirling instead of walking?  Our guess is getting them into a Summer dance program would be a great idea.  For the older dancer, continuing dance education through summer is crucial for continuing technical ability and strength.

At Body Logic Dance we do not take summer off, and we encourage dance education year round.  Why? There are too many reasons to list them all but, here are five things to consider when deciding if your dancer should keep dancing through the summer.

1. Technique
This one is a no-brainer, increasing your technical ability takes work, even one week off can alter your progress.  Dance training requires lots of repetition and conditioning of the body.  Taking classes during the summer allows dancers to keep training while trying new styles.

2. Conditioning
Often class is never long enough to allow an adequate amount of time to focus on strength training in regularly scheduled dance class.  As a teacher, one always wishes there was more time for conditioning.   Just like technique, increasing your strength takes repetition.  Summertime gives us the opportunity to take intensive, classes, and workshops that will help us become stronger more efficient movers.

3.  Learn Something New
It's true, you may be a ballerina at heart or even a talented hip-hop dancer, either way, it is important to cross-train and increase your movement vocabulary by taking classes and styles new to you.  A good dance academy will offer a summer program with a variety of options that are different from the usual schedule.

4.  Friends
As dancers and humans it is important to have a community of individuals we can create friendships with.  Taking dance during the summer allows us to continue dancing with our friends and gives us a chance to make new friends too. It is important we give our children a place away from home that they know they are accepted and loved.  It has been said that dance friends are always the best friends, we couldn't agree more.

5.  BLD offers a variety
We know summer is a busy time for any family. Our summer lineup will work even with the craziest summer schedule. Check out all we have to offer, classes are filling, ENROLL TODAY.
